Confessions of a First-time Stripper

by Don ~ June 1st, 2009. Filed under: Interesting.

Get your minds out of the gutter.

I stripped books for the first time tonight at my part-time bookstore job. For those of you who don’t know, mass market books are “returned” to the publisher by tearing off the front cover, returning that for credit, then recycling the rest of the book. Yes, horribly wasteful, etc. etc. but this was the first time I’ve done it myself.

And it was books from the SF/F section (Chadwick, I know you’re reading this — don’t worry, we were careful but we desperately needed the space!), so I knew a lot of the authors. To everyone whose covers I stripped and whose books I destroyed tonight: I’m sorry.

On the other hand, with a few authors (who I didn’t know) it was strangely cathartic. Mwa-haha…

I worked for years in a bookstore, and I hated seeing this. I could never bring myself to do it.

Be honest….was my book in there? I’d just be happy to know it was even in the store at all. :)

The main thing is that you didn’t have to strip any of your own. And I hold no hard feelings if you had to strip any of mine. :-)

Don you caught me! I’m not lurking here to find out store gossip, I swear! understand your feelings on mass market stripping though, even after eight years of bookselling I still have a hard time with it. I hope things are going well for you at the store otherwise.

Jeff, we have definitely carried your book, it is one of the Eberron novels I keep bringing back into stock. I grew up playing D&D and reading the Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance novels, so they never get short shrift on the shelves where I work.

Well, thanks, Chadwick! 😀 That’s always good to hear.

I would have nightmares if forced to do this…
